Go look at the top of your windshield, right behind the rearview mirror. If there’s a small housing tucked up there with what looks like a little camera lens inside, your car has driver-assist tech that watches the road through the glass. And the moment that glass is replaced, that camera is looking through a slightly different window than the one it was set up on.

Recalibrating it back to spec is ADAS calibration. It’s the step that turns a new windshield from “installed” into “safe to rely on,” and it’s the part of the job most people have never heard of until they’re handed a quote.

What ADAS actually is

ADAS stands for advanced driver-assistance systems, which is the umbrella term for the features that have quietly become standard: lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, sometimes traffic-sign recognition. Most of them lean on that forward-facing camera bonded to the windshield. The camera sees lane lines, the car ahead, a pedestrian stepping off a curb, and the software acts on what it sees.

Here’s why the glass matters. The camera is aimed with a precision measured in fractions of a degree. Tilt its view by one degree and, a hundred metres down the road, the spot it thinks it’s looking at has moved by a couple of metres. That’s the difference between “sees the car in your lane” and “sees the car in the next lane.”

Why a new windshield throws it off

The camera doesn’t just sit near the glass, it looks through it, and it’s mounted to a bracket that’s part of that glass assembly. Take the old windshield out and bond a new one in, and three things change at once: the exact angle of the mount, the thickness and optical properties of the new glass, and the camera’s position by a hair. Individually tiny. To a system aiming by fractions of a degree, not tiny at all.

So after any windshield replacement on an ADAS-equipped vehicle, the camera has to be told, precisely, where straight ahead is again. Skip it and the features don’t switch off with a friendly warning. They keep running on a bad reference, which is worse than not having them.

Static, dynamic, or both

There are two ways to calibrate, and which one your car needs is set by the manufacturer, not by the shop’s preference.

Static calibration happens indoors, with the car parked and squared up to precise targets: printed boards on stands, set at exact measured distances and heights in front of the vehicle. The camera studies the targets, and the system learns its reference points from a known layout. It needs level floor, controlled lighting, and room to set the boards at the specified distance, which is why a driveway or a busy bay can’t do it properly.

Dynamic calibration happens on the road. A technician connects a scan tool and drives the car at a set speed on well-marked roads while the system recalibrates against real lane lines and traffic. Clear markings and decent weather matter here, which is its own reason not to book this during a February slush storm.

Plenty of vehicles need both, static first to set the baseline, then a dynamic drive to confirm it. We run the calibration in-house as part of the same visit, so you’re not sent off to a dealer afterward.

The in-house question worth asking

A lot of glass shops don’t own the targets, the scan tools, or the floor space, so they sublet calibration to a dealer or a specialist. That’s not dishonest, but it has real consequences for you: a second appointment, another day arranged around it, and sometimes a car that’s driven around uncalibrated in between.

When you’re comparing shops, the question that tells you the most is simple: “Do you calibrate here, or do you send it out?” A shop that does the whole replacement and the calibration under one roof gives your day back and keeps the whole job accountable to one team. When you don’t need it

Not every windshield job triggers calibration, and we won’t invent one that isn’t required.

A chip repair never needs calibration. The glass isn’t removed, the camera never moves, so there’s nothing to reset. If a shop tries to tack calibration onto a resin repair, that’s a red flag.

Older vehicles without driver-assist cameras don’t need it either. If there’s no camera behind your mirror and no lane-keep or auto-braking on the features list, a straightforward glass swap is the whole job. The honest boundary runs the other way, though: if your car does have the camera, calibration isn’t optional and it isn’t a place to save money. A system aimed wrong is a system you can’t trust in the exact moment you’re counting on it.
